A Day of Fly Fishing Instruction

What to expect during a private instruction day on the river.

Before the Trip

Before we meet on the river we’ll talk briefly about your experience level, the techniques you’re most interested in learning, and what you hope to get out of the day. This helps me tailor the instruction to your goal

Morning on the River

The day usually begins with reading water together. Rather than jumping straight into fishing, we take time to look at the river and break it down into holding water, feeding lanes, and current seams.

From there we begin working through the techniques that best fit the conditions.

Midday Learning

As we move through the river we focus on the core systems that drive successful fly fishing:

reading water
trout positioning
depth control
presentation adjustments

This is where anglers begin to see why certain water produces fish while other areas do not.

Afternoon Refinement

By the afternoon the focus shifts toward refinement — adjusting flies, weight, positioning, and technique based on what the river is telling us.

The goal is not just to catch fish, but to develop a framework you can apply on any river.

What You Leave With

At the end of the day you should leave with a clearer understanding of:

how to read water
how trout position themselves
how to adjust techniques based on conditions

In other words, the goal of the day is simple:

you should not need me next time.
